Your Roof: To Repair or Replace

How can you tell if your roof can be repaired, or if it needs to be replaced?

  • Shingles – if your shingles do not bend and crumble, they may need to be replaced
  • Surface under the shingles – if you can see the shingle underlayment, it may be time for a new roof
  • Roof ridge – if the ridge or your roof straight, or does it have waves?  It there are any sunken spots in the ridge of your roof, it may be time to call a professional for an estimate.
  • Layers of shingles – if you have multiple layers of shingles and still have a leak, this may be a sign of previous repairs.  This could mean that your roof needs to be replaced

How to Clean Wall Coverings and Wallpaper

How to Clean Wall Coverings and Wallpaper?

Do you love your existing wall coverings or wallpaper, but do not like the dirty or dingy appearance?  If the colors are not as vibrant as they once were, you can try cleaning certain types of wall coverings and wallpaper.  If you are to the point of wanting to replace your wall covering or wallpaper, why not give it a try?

Here is a list of a few types of wall coverings and wallpapers and how to clean them:

  • fabric wall coverings, including grass cloth – clean using a vacuum cleaner, either by using vacuum attachments or a small handheld vacuum
  • delicate fabrics, including silk and hand painted – contact the wall covering manufacturer for cleaning instructions
  • nonwashable wallpaper – try an art gum eraser or dough-type wallpaper cleaner
  • washable wallpaper – mix 1/4 cup liquid dishwashing detergent and 1 cup of warm water until a foam, use a sponge to apply the dry suds to the wallpaper

What about fresh stains on your wallpaper?

Here are a few types of stains and things you can try:

  • grease spots on wallpaper – blot with a clean paper towel, hold a clean piece of absorbent paper to the spot and press with a warm iron, replace the paper once it becomes greasy.  If that does not work, you can purchase a wallpaper stain remover
  • crayon on wallpaper – use a sponge to apply a dry cleaning solvent.  If this does not remove the color, try mixing 1 teaspoon of bleach to 1 cup of water and apply to the crayon color.
  • crayon on vinyl wall covering – try silver polish or dishwashing detergent, applied with a clean cloth
  • ink on washable wallpaper – using a cloth or cotton swab damp with chlorine bleach, lightly dab the spot.  Rinse with a cloth or sponge that has been dipped in clean water

As with all of these tips, it is best to first test any method for cleaning on a scrap of wall covering or wallpaper.  People always ask why we recommend ordering a few extra rolls of wall covering or wallpaper from the same lot.  The reason is to have extra to test for cleaning, or extra for repairs.

if you have tried any of the above methods and are still not happy with your wall covering or wallpaper, contact HCG Contractor 1-800-Painting.  We may be able to repair the area if you have extra rolls, or help you with wall covering and wallpaper replacement.

Fall Home Maintenance Checklist

Your Fall Home Maintenance Checklist:

As the seasons start to change, you need to prepare your home for the changes in the temperatures and elements.  For the exterior of your home, here are a few things to check:

  • If you have antennas or satellite dish equipment on the roof or exterior of your home, check to make sure they are securely attached to the surface.  Check any mounting straps, screws, or bolts.
  • If you have a chimney, check for cracks or loose bricks and mortar.  Inspect the surrounding flashing to make sure it is secure.
  • Since fall is the time for falling leaves, make sure your gutters and downspouts are clean and secure.
  • Check any trees that are close to your house.  Make sure they are healthy and trim any limbs that could fall on your home.
  • Check all windows and doors to make sure all weatherstripping and seals are in place.  Replace any wood trim or molding that is weathered or rotten.
  • Remove any leaves and brush from the exterior foundation of your home.  Keep the foundation areas clean to help prevent standing water and keep rotting debris away from your home that may attract bugs.
  • Turn off and drain any outside faucets.
  • Close any exterior foundation vents

For the interior of your home, here are a few things to check:

  • Test your smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors and change the batteries
  • Check the interior sides of all doors and windows to make sure all seals are intact.
  • Test your heat to make sure it works properly.
  • Inspect and clean out the interior of your fireplace.

Color Characteristics

How you choose the right color for your room or wall?  Here are a few helpful tips!

How does light affect color?

Different types of light can cause color tones to look vastly different than in the can or on a color swatch.

  • Fluorescent light amplifies cool colors and weakens warm colors.  Blue will tend to look more vibrant and yellow will tend to look dull.  An incandescent light will tend to amplify warm colors and dull cool colors.
  • Reflected light takes on the characteristic of whatever it is reflected from.  A cool reflected color will look different than a warm reflected color.
  • Regular light when low, will make a color look dark and reduce the color’s intensity.  When regular light is high, it will increase the color’s intensity.  If there is too much regular light, it can cause colors to look washed out.
how to alter a room with color

How can you use color to make a room look smaller or larger?

  • Warm colors tend to make a room feel smaller, and can be used to make a large cold room feel warm and intimate.  Some examples of warm colors are: yellow, red, and orange.
  • Cool colors tend to make a room feel larger.  Some examples of cool colors are: blue, green, and violet.
  •  Color intensity also can affect the size of a room.  Intense colors tend to make a room small.  Less intense colors tend to make a room seem larger.  Darker, more intense colors absorb light and make a room seem small.  Lighter, less intense colors reflect light and make a room seem larger and more open.

Exterior Residential Paint Failures

What causes exterior residential paint failures?

The exterior of your home is exposed to sun, temperature changes, wind, and rain.  A good paint job should help protect the exterior of your home from the elements.  If the surface of your home is not properly prepared, a bad paint job can work with the elements to damage the exterior of your home.

Here are a few different types of exteriors and potential problems that can occur if the surface is not properly prepared:
  1. Wood – The exterior of your home may be constructed of either a natural wood, or a man-made wood product.  If your exterior wood surface is not properly prepared, it causes the wood to be exposed to moisture.  Moisture is one of the most popular causes of exterior paint failures.  Moisture can cause exterior paint to blister, crack, flake, and peel.  It can also cause mildew and exterior wood to warp.  Proper surface preparation helps to protect the exterior wood surface from the elements and helps the paint to properly adhere to the wood, giving your home a beautiful paint job!
  2. Masonry – An exterior masonry structure can be made of concrete, brick, or stucco.  All masonry must be clean and dry prior to painting.  As with many other substrates, water is a major cause of masonry paint failures.  When exposed to the elements, water can cause the paint to lift off the surface.  It is important to know the type of masonry surface, if the masonry surface has been properly aged prior to painting, and if any measures have been taken to protect the masonry surface from water.

Wallcovering / Wallpaper Repairs

Wallcovering / Wallpaper Repairs:

Do you have a wallcovering or wallpaper that you absolutely love, but is in need or repair?  If you have extra rolls of your existing wallcovering / wallpaper, HCG Contractor may be able to help!  Our crew is available to look at the damage to your wallcovering / wallpaper and provide you with options.

Prior to scheduling an appointment, here are a few questions that will help HCG Contractor to help better serve you:
  1. What is the age of your existing wallcovering / wallpaper?
  2. Was the wallcovering or wallpaper installed when your home was under construction?
  3. How many rolls of extra wallcovering / wallpaper do you have?  (Please have on site when we arrive)
  4. If you do not have any extra wallcovering / wallpaper, would you like to remove the existing wallcovering and replace it with a similar pattern?  Would you like to remove the existing wallcovering and paint the existing areas?
Here is a list of common wallcovering / wallpaper issues that we may be able to repair:
  • Scratches, gouges, scrapes, punctures, or holes – If you have enough replacement wallcovering or wallpaper with the exact pattern match that needs repair, this can many times be an easy fix.  The biggest challenge may be the age of the wallcovering.  Also, were the walls were properly prepared during the wallcovering installation process?  If the existing wallcovering is well aged, the new patch will stand out and make the surrounding wallcovering look dull or dirty.
  • Peeling seams – Usually, this is another simple repair that can be completed without any extra wallcovering needed.  Again, the biggest challenge is how the existing wallcovering was installed and is the walls were properly prepared prior to installation
  • Previous wallcovering repair has shrunk – This should be an easy repair if there is enough wallcovering of the existing pattern.
  • Bubbles in the wallcovering – This is a repair that can usually be completed without any additional wallcovering.  The difficulty of the repair depends on how the walls were prepared prior to installation.  Also, the problem may be due to a wallcovering issue.
  • Shrunken seams – This repair is sometimes tricky and may require removal and replacement of the existing shrunken areas.

If you have any questions about your existing wallcovering or wallpaper, give HCG Contractor a call.  Our crew is always available to help!
