What is cracking?

Cracking is when hairline cracks begin to form due to a split in the dry paint film of at least in coat of paint.  As the cracks become worse, the paint will begin to flake.

What can cause Paint to crack?
  • applying a low adhesion paint
  • applying a less flexible paint
  • applying paint that is too thin
  • improper surface preparation
  • the age of the paint
  • painting over a glossy surface
How do you repair cracking paint?
  • remove any loose and flaking paint
  • sand the area
  • prime any areas before painting
  • allow to thoroughly dry

  • How will the island fit your families needs?
  • How will the island fit with your entertaining needs?
  • How much eating space will you add to the island?
  • Do you need additional storage space?
  • Do you need a food prep station?
  • What type of cooktop will be installed?  What type of hood is needed? Where is the best placement for the hood?
  • Is a sink needed on your island?
  • How much countertop space is needed?
  • How many electrical outlets are needed?
  • How many shelves are needed and what will they be used for?
  • What is the knee space height?
  • What is the seating capacity and what type of seating will be used?
  • Do you have young children or planning a family in the future?  You many want to consider radius corners on your island.
  • What type of material will be used for your island countertop?
  • How much lighting do you need over your island and what type?
  • Where is the placement for the kitchen island to give the best access to cabinets, appliances, sink, and table?  Think about your kitchen working space like a triangle.

Paint Problems – Blistering

What is blistering?

This is the name for bubbles that are caused when the paint looses adhesion and begins to lift from the substrate.

What can cause blistering in paint?
  • applying paint in direct sunlight
  • applying paint to a hot surface
  • moisture from an interior source that migrates to the exterior and causes the paint to rise from the surface
  • applying an oil-based paint to a damp or wet surface
  • applying an alkyd paint to a damp or wet surface
  • damp basements
  • lack of surface preparation before applying a latex paint
  • improper ventilation in kitchens and bathrooms
  • exposing freshly applied latex paint to dew, high humidity, moisture, or rain
  • exterior wall leaks
How do you repair paint that is blistering?

Unfortunately, the only way to repair paint that is blistering is to remove the old paint.  After the paint is removed, the source of the moisture will need to be found and repaired.  Proper ventilation may need to be installed to prevent future moisture problems.  The substrate under the paint will need to be cleaned and allowed to dry before any new primer or finish paint can be applied.

What is alligatoring?

Alligatoring is an exterior paint problem that occurs when the paint begins to crack in a pattern that resembles the scales of an alligator.  The cracks are usually in the surface of the paint and do not expose the substrate below the paint.

What can cause this condition in paint?
  • some oil-based paints will crack and alligator due to age
  • some oil-based paints will crack and alligator with a fluctuation in temperatures
  • applying an oil enamel over a flexible coating
  • applying a topcoat before the primer or basecoat is dry
  • applying a coating over a glossy finish
How do you repair paint that is alligatoring?

Unfortunately, the only way to repair paint in this condition is to remove the old paint.  After the paint is removed, the substrate under the paint will need to be cleaned and allowed to dry before any new primer or finish paint can be applied.
