Kitchen Cabinets – So Many Choices! What is the Difference??
The right kitchen cabinets can make your kitchen a room you love, and the wrong kitchen cabinets can make your kitchen the most hated room in your home. They can be a conversation piece for showcasing your unique style, or they can be a huge mess that stick out like a sore thumb. If you love to cook and the kitchen is the heart of your home, the functionality of your cabinets helps maintain your organization when creating meals for friends and family.
If you are looking to replace your cabinets or add new cabinets, there are tons of different options to choose from. How do you narrow down the selection or even know where to start?
Here is some information with links to get you started:
Types of Cabinets –
There are three main types of cabinets:
- In-Stock Cabinets – these are cabinets that you can find in any home improvement store. They are pre-made from standard sizes, colors, and styles. As long as the size fits your measurements, make your selection from the available cabinets and you can have the cabinets in hours or days depending on stock and delivery options. Since they are pre-made from stock templates and styles, there are usually very few options regarding design and construction materials. In-stock cabinets are typically more basic and only available for certain measurements. This means if you need an odd size, it may not be offered and cabinets will need to be modified (this could change the functionality and look of the cabinet). In-Stock cabinets are usually the best option for tight budgets and tight timelines. https://www.homedepot.com/c/kitchen_cabinet_collection_by_colors
- Semi-Custom Cabinets – these are stock cabinets that do allow some customizing options with regard to style and measurements. Because of the customizing options, they are usually more expensive that standard in-stock cabinets. Depending on the customization involved, there are usually longer lead times for delivery and a flexible installation schedule is recommended.
- Custom Cabinets – these are usually the most expensive cabinets. With unlimited style options, material options, and any size you need, the only restriction is your budget. To get started, a meeting is usually set with a designer, cabinet maker and contractor. During this meeting, measurements are taken and the design is discussed. All parties involved decide on style and material choices. Preliminary drawings are provided and many revisions can be drawn before final approval. Once the cabinet maker will begin building the cabinets. These cabinets usually have the longest lead time since they are completely custom and many times require ordering custom materials (which also can have long delivery times). It is best to have a very loose installation schedule for custom cabinets.
