  • will the existing floors need to be refinished
  • square footage of areas to be recoated or refinished
  • current condition of the wood floors
  • type of wood flooring and if it is a specialty type of wood that requires extra steps or a certain type of coating
  • difficulty of removing the existing finish
  • type of finish or coating to be used and how much will be needed
  • are their any wood stairs that need to be recoated or refinished
  • will any flooring need to be removed or repaired
  • are their any obstructions or items that will need to be removed

What may be involved in the recoating or refinishing process?

  • buffing the existing wood floor by using a clog-resistant sanding disk to remove the existing finish without damaging the wood
  • sanding the wood floor
  • applying the appropriate coatings to the existing wood floor

Cork Wallpaper Install

Wallpaper – How Many Different Types?

Yes, wallpaper is making a comeback! It has not regained the massive popularity from the days of the brightly colored and large floral prints that you may have seen in your grandmother’s formal room, but it is being used to bring color and patterns to accent walls and powder rooms. Depending on what type of wallpaper you choose, it can be a quick and cost effective way to change the look of any room.

Now for the big question, what type of wallpaper should you choose? Are there certain types of wallpaper that are best suited for different rooms and areas of your home? Are there certain wallpapers that are more difficult to hang than others? Why are some wallpapers so expensive?

Here are some different types and answers:

  • Vinyl Wallpaper – In commercial application, vinyls are most commonly used in restaurants and hotels.  In residential applications, they are best suited for kitchens, bathrooms, and other high traffic areas. These types of wallpapers are more durable and able to be cleaned. There are four different types of vinyl wallpaper: solid vinyl, vinyl coated, paper backed vinyl, and fabric backed vinyl.
    1. Solid vinyl is waterproof, scratch and tear resistant, durable, and easy to clean. It can be installed in bathrooms, kitchens, children’s bedroom, and playrooms
    2. Vinyl coated can be scrubbed, easy to clean, heat resistant, humidity resistant, and resistant to grease. It is best for high traffic areas, kitchens, bathrooms, family rooms, and children’s areas.
    3. Paper backed vinyl is moisture and stain resistant, can be washed, but it is not suitable for rooms and areas with high humidity. If it is installed in a humid area, the paper can separate from the vinyl or pull away from the wall. Depending on the humidity levels and length of time that the wallpaper has been exposed to the humidity and damage caused, the wallpaper will eventually need to be replaced.
    4. Fabric backed vinyl can be cleaned, scrubbed, and is durable.  It can be used in high traffic areas, entryways, children’s areas, dens, kitchens, bathrooms, and can be installed over walls with imperfections. There are three types of fabric backed vinyls that can be used for specific applications:
      1. Type 1 – light grade for light traffic areas, best for use in areas above chair rail, can be used in hotels and offices
      2. Type 2 – medium grade for higher traffic areas, best for use in hallways and entry areas
      3. Type 3 – heavy grade for areas that are can be damaged by equipment, best for use in hospitals and food service locations
  • Grasscloth is a more natural wallcovering that is made from different grasses and plants. It is more suited for rooms that need a more rustic look. Since grasscloth is made from plant materials, it can contain many natural imperfections and colors that are not uniform throughout the roll. After installation is complete, the seams are visible and the installed panels will not match. Grasscloth is not recommended for high traffic areas or areas that are prone to damage. This wallpaper can stain very easily, is very hard to clean, and does not do well in areas with high humidity. If you are looking for a wallpaper with a seamless and uniform look that flows effortlessly around the room, grasscloth is not the material for you.
  • Regular Wallpaper can be found in most home improvement stores and online. These papers come in thousands of colors and designs. Many regular wallpapers are not as durable as vinyl or as thick as grasscloth, so most walls will need to be smoothed and prepared to make sure there are no imperfections that will show through the wallpaper. Many of these wallpapers cannot be cleaned, so make sure you have enough from the same lot for repairs.

Wallpaper and wallcoverings can be a great way to add color and designs to a room or wall. Make sure you research what type of wallpaper will work best for the area. Some wallpapers can cost thousands of dollars and can be very labor intensive. If you need more information on the different type of wallpaper and costs, visit Mahones. Here you can order samples and search by theme, brand, color, and style.

How to Clean Wall Coverings and Wallpaper

How to Clean Wall Coverings and Wallpaper?

Do you love your existing wall coverings or wallpaper, but do not like the dirty or dingy appearance?  If the colors are not as vibrant as they once were, you can try cleaning certain types of wall coverings and wallpaper.  If you are to the point of wanting to replace your wall covering or wallpaper, why not give it a try?

Here is a list of a few types of wall coverings and wallpapers and how to clean them:

  • fabric wall coverings, including grass cloth – clean using a vacuum cleaner, either by using vacuum attachments or a small handheld vacuum
  • delicate fabrics, including silk and hand painted – contact the wall covering manufacturer for cleaning instructions
  • nonwashable wallpaper – try an art gum eraser or dough-type wallpaper cleaner
  • washable wallpaper – mix 1/4 cup liquid dishwashing detergent and 1 cup of warm water until a foam, use a sponge to apply the dry suds to the wallpaper

What about fresh stains on your wallpaper?

Here are a few types of stains and things you can try:

  • grease spots on wallpaper – blot with a clean paper towel, hold a clean piece of absorbent paper to the spot and press with a warm iron, replace the paper once it becomes greasy.  If that does not work, you can purchase a wallpaper stain remover
  • crayon on wallpaper – use a sponge to apply a dry cleaning solvent.  If this does not remove the color, try mixing 1 teaspoon of bleach to 1 cup of water and apply to the crayon color.
  • crayon on vinyl wall covering – try silver polish or dishwashing detergent, applied with a clean cloth
  • ink on washable wallpaper – using a cloth or cotton swab damp with chlorine bleach, lightly dab the spot.  Rinse with a cloth or sponge that has been dipped in clean water

As with all of these tips, it is best to first test any method for cleaning on a scrap of wall covering or wallpaper.  People always ask why we recommend ordering a few extra rolls of wall covering or wallpaper from the same lot.  The reason is to have extra to test for cleaning, or extra for repairs.

if you have tried any of the above methods and are still not happy with your wall covering or wallpaper, contact HCG Contractor 1-800-Painting.  We may be able to repair the area if you have extra rolls, or help you with wall covering and wallpaper replacement.

color and light

Color Characteristics

What are color characteristics?

How you choose the right color for your room or wall?  Here are a few helpful tips!

How does light affect color?

Different types of light can cause color tones to look vastly different than in the can or on a color swatch.

  • Fluorescent light amplifies cool colors and weakens warm colors.  Blue will tend to look more vibrant and yellow will tend to look dull.  An incandescent light will tend to amplify warm colors and dull cool colors.
  • Reflected light takes on the characteristic of whatever it is reflected from.  A cool reflected color will look different than a warm reflected color.
  • Regular light when low, will make a color look dark and reduce the color’s intensity.  When regular light is high, it will increase the color’s intensity.  If there is too much regular light, it can cause colors to look washed out.
how to alter a room with color

How can you use color to make a room look smaller or larger?

  • Warm colors tend to make a room feel smaller, and can be used to make a large cold room feel warm and intimate.  Some examples of warm colors are: yellow, red, and orange.
  • Cool colors tend to make a room feel larger.  Some examples of cool colors are: blue, green, and violet.
  •  Color intensity also can affect the size of a room.  Intense colors tend to make a room small.  Less intense colors tend to make a room seem larger.  Darker, more intense colors absorb light and make a room seem small.  Lighter, less intense colors reflect light and make a room seem larger and more open.
